WOMEN'S HEALTH CARE:

by Belita Cowan

Anshen Publishing, Ann Arbor, Mich. 60 pages, $4

Review by Marian Sandmaier, Washington,

DC

This book cannot be categorized neatly. One is tempted simply to describe it as an excellent reference guide on women's health for researchers, organizers, providers, teachers, and writers, and leave it at that. But it is much more that a good bibliography. It also provides an issue-by-issue analysis of our health care system's irresponsibility toward women, and of the need for women to gain control of their medical care. From this perspective, Women's Health Care is a powerful conciousnessraiser as well as an information resource.

The book is organized into more than fifteen subject areas, from standard topics such as childbirth, abortion and birth control to such overlooked issues as alcoholism, drug abuse, psychotherapy and aging. Most of the subjects are introduced by a succinct analysis of key issues, followed by a bibliography that included books and articles published through early 1977. Some highlights include “The Physician's Comment Regarding Breast Cancer," an essay by an eminent surgeon arguing against radical mastectomy; and a report on the causal relationship between menopausal estrogens and uterine cancer which includes interviews with several researchers. There is also a one-page fact sheet on menopause which answers some of the most frequently asked questions on the subject.

The book also includes a section on "Doing Your Own Research," which explains how to unearth health information and does a good job of demystifying medical libraries. At the back of the book is a listing of recommended publications and films dealing with women's health as well as a directory of national and local women's health groups.

Cowan helped establish and worked as medical editor on Her-self newspaper. One of her particular concerns has been the health risks of synthetic estrogens, and it is no coincidence that the sections

on estrogen replacement therapy and diethylstilbestrol (DES) are among the best in the book. In the latter section, Cowan describes her own survey of 200 University of Michigan women who were given DES as a morning-after pill between 1968 and 1974. The survey revealed that the majority had no idea they were taking an experimental drug, 80% were not given a breast or pelvic exam prior to recieving the prescription, and 25% became so ill after taking only a few pills that they were unable to continue the regimen.

There are a few imbalances: the bibliography on alcoholism has no preface, while the analysis of malpractice includes no bibliography, although some sources on malpractice are included in another section. There is a section on rape, but nothing on battered women. From the standpoint of format, my only complaint is that the bibliographical material is not arranged in alphabetical order, which makes it a chore to search out specific books and articles.

But overall, Women's Health Care is a thorough, hard hitting publication which will serve both as a major information resource on women's health and an impetus to action.

The book can be ordered from Anshen Publishing Company, 556 Second Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 48103. There is a 20% discount on orders of at least 10 copies, 25% for bookstores, and 30% for anyone who cannot afford the full $4.
